3 – Standard T5,6,7 of container floors

IICL stands for The Institute of International Container Lessors – is an association of suppliers, leasing containers and chassis of containers founded in 1971 in the United States. IICL, on behalf of its members, operates in government, regulatory, customs, tax, education, technology and environmental matters. The Institute conducts its activities through the Technology Committee and the Tax and Legal Committee consisting of representatives from member companies and through its employees at the IICL headquarters. It is recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), actively working with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the World Customs Organization (WCO), the UN Economic and Social Council, and the UN Conference. on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) as well as regulatory organizations around the world.

From January 15, 2019, 20 container flooring manufacturers agreed to print additional information T 7, T 6 and T 5 on the edge of the floorboard where T 5, T 6 and T 7 are defined as the table below:

Regulations of IICL B001 2019 on container flooring specifications

a. Core veneer:

  • 19 layers is the minimum quantity for plywood and bamboo floorboards. 
  • Unless the customer specifies a specific structure, manufacturers can use any layer of wood to produce flooring that meets all the requirements of this regulation as well as ISO standards 

WARNING: The longitudinal wood layer has flexural and shear strength. They are used for cont floorboards in the roof, floor and core of the floorboard. 

  • Increase the number of outer longitudinal wood layers (top and bottom) by more than 3 layers, causing cracks on the surface to appear on some panels. Increasing the number of longitudinal wood layers at the center from 1 to 3 panels slightly increases the stiffness of some panels and is technically predicted to increase the resistance to panel cutting incidents – a common cause of failure of cont floor panels. These results are not always true.

b. Core veneer quality:

The top layer must be 1 solid sheet. If the surface of the flooring is covered with film or similar coverings, the laminate must also be a solid sheet.

c. Humidity:

  • According to BS EN 322, the humidity must not exceed 14% at the time of introduction into production
  • Each board should have all edges glued with an external varnish or an equivalent coating to minimize moisture

d. Density and Specific gravity:

  • At least 700 kg/m3 at the time of production 
  • Specific gravity: at least 0.70 at the time of manufacture.
